Hernia Surgery Q & A

What is a hernia?

When an organ, usually your intestine, pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding tissue, a hernia results. Inguinal hernias are one of the most common types of hernia that people experience.

Many people live with hernias for years before they interrupt daily activity or cause pain. They often worsen as you get older due to repeated physical stress. Men are far more likely to get a hernia as compared to women.

What is an inguinal hernia?

An inguinal hernia occurs when soft tissue from the intestine pushes through a weak spot in a muscle. Usually, they appear in the groin. You may have a congenital weakness present since birth that can cause the hernia, or it may be acquired over time from life’s stresses.

Symptoms of an inguinal hernia include a lump in the groin area that is present when you’re standing or straining but disappears when you lie down. The lump is likely to be painful, especially when you lift something heavy.

Other symptoms include:

  • Swelling of the scrotum
  • Excruciating abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Painful constipation
  • Loss of appetite

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to consult with Dr. Abeyatunge to see if hernia surgery is necessary.

When is hernia surgery necessary?

When your hernia symptoms become severe enough to compromise your quality of life and activity level, medical intervention is necessary. If your hernia isn’t responding to conservative treatments, surgery is likely advisable.

Dr. Abeyatunge performs hernia surgery laparoscopically whenever possible. This procedure is minimally invasive and takes about 60-90 minutes. A laparoscopic procedure requires smaller incisions, so it’s less traumatic and allows for a faster recovery.

If you have symptoms that suggest a hernia, call Integrative Therapies of Las Vegas & Med Spa LLC for an appointment or schedule online today.
