Pulmonary Disease Q & A

What is pulmonary disease?

Pulmonary disease is a blanket term referring to ailments that affect the lungs and respiratory system. Sometimes, it occurs due to an infection, or it can result from smoking or breathing in toxins and pollution.

When left untreated, pulmonary disease can negatively affect your quality of life. As it progresses, you may find it difficult to work, exercise, or participate in the activities you love.

What are the symptoms of pulmonary disease?

The symptoms of pulmonary disease vary. Common indications include:

  • Wheezing
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Unintended weight loss
  • Lack of energy
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Yellow, white, or green mucus

As pulmonary disease gets worse, you might also experience swelling in your legs, feet, or ankles.

What are some common types of pulmonary disease?

Dr. Abeyatunge regularly works with men and women to diagnose and treat several types of pulmonary disease, including:

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

COPD is a chronic pulmonary disease that causes inflammation of the lungs. Two of the most common causes of COPD are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Both of these conditions cause severe damage to your lungs, usually as a result of smoking.

Although there’s no cure for COPD, it’s possible to manage symptoms and reduce the risk of other associated health problems.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis causes damage and scarring to your lung tissue for no apparent reason. The thickened, stiff tissue negatively affects your lung function, making it difficult to breathe.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to reverse the damage caused by idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. However, medications and therapies can improve your lung capacity and health in general.

Chronic asthma

Chronic asthma is a condition that causes your airways to narrow, swell, and produce extra mucus. When combined, these factors trigger coughing, wheezing, and make it difficult to breathe. Asthma affects people of all ages, races, and backgrounds. For some, it’s a minor annoyance. For others, it can result in a life-threatening asthma attack.

How is pulmonary disease diagnosed?

To diagnose pulmonary disease, Dr. Abeyatunge conducts a physical exam, reviews your medical history, and asks about your symptoms and lifestyle. He also tests your lung function with spirometry or peak flow.

Spirometry

Spirometry is a lung function test that measures the narrowing of your bronchial tubes. It calculates how much air you can exhale after a deep breath and how quickly you can breathe out.

Peak flow

Peak flow is a lung function test that measures how hard you exhale. A lower than average reading indicates that your lungs aren’t working well, and your pulmonary disease is getting worse.
